Men of Integrity, May/Jun 2001

Campfire Dialogue
This Week's Theme: Introducing Christ
Thursday, May 24

Key Bible Verse: I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some (1 Corinthians 9:22).
Bonus Reading: 1 Cor. 9:19-23

Atlanta businessman Bill Shaw recently went on a week-long outdoor excursion with several non-believing friends, who drank a lot of beer and spoke in "rough and salty" terms. While they were enjoying themselves, he busied himself with the chores—cleaning up, washing dishes and cooking many of the meals. "I tried to be the best 'low man on the totem pole' I could be," he says.

Drawing from his knowledge of physics and chemistry, Shaw spent two evenings explaining how science proves the existence of God. "I didn't argue if they didn't agree. It was just a tool to get the conversation going in the right direction."

On their final night together, he told about events that led to his commitment to Christ. "They were actually asking good questions all the way through," he says.

While there were no starlight conversions, Shaw felt some important bridges were built. "It's not so critical to 'close the sale' if you know the customer is still interested in the product," he points out.

—Robert Tamasy in Life@Work

Respond:
How could I build a bridge to a non-believing friend?

Thought to Apply:
We must know people—like them, enjoy them, make friends with them, take trouble for them—before it may even be right to "speak" to them about spiritual matters.

—Sam Shoemaker (New York minister)

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Lord, help me to both live my faith and be prepared to talk about it with those I encounter.
