Virtual Infidelity
Theme for the Week: Guarding Against an Affair
Sunday, August 26, 2001

Key Bible Verse: A man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself (Proverbs 6:32).
Bonus Reading: Proverbs 6:20-35

The French word for it is demon de midi; the "devil" that gets into men at the "noonday" of their lives when their wives have perhaps grown matronly. The German word is Torschlusspanik, "closed-door panic"; the pursuit of young women by middle-aged men seeking a final fling "before the gates close."

For the midlife man who wonders, "What would it be like with another woman?" the Internet is the perfect trap for his wandering lust.

An article in the Orange County Register asked, "Is a sexual encounter online an act of adultery?' When is it adultery—a flirtatious smile, an intimate dinner, a hug, a kiss, petting, or is it when there has been sexual penetration?"

No question that virtual infidelity can lead to the real thing. Everyone has a story about people who met on the Net, had passionate conversations and cybersex, then moved on to real-life adulterous liaisons. Author Tom Clancy's wife is suing him for divorce because of what happened between him and a woman he met online."

Lord, give me the wisdom and resolve to preserve my marriage as a trust from you.
