Theme for the Week: Guarding Against an Affair

Key Bible Verse: "Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).
Bonus Reading: Matthew 5:27-30

I was tooling northbound on the Pacific Coast Highway that sunny morning, savoring the view of L.A.'s beach culture. I spotted her two hundred yards ahead, jogging toward me along the coastal sidewalk. My eyes locked on to this goddesslike blond with glistening tanned body, whose bikini bra struggled to contain her ample bosom. As she continued jogging, I turned my head further and further. Then blam!

My Mercedes had plowed into a Chevelle that had come to a complete stop. Fortunately, I was traveling only 15 miles per hour. But my bumper was crumpled and the hood crinkled. I got out of the car—embarrassed, saturated with guilt, unable to offer a satisfying explanation.

That evening, I put my best spin on the unfortunate incident. "You see, Sandy," I told my beautiful wife, "it was stop-and-go, and I was reaching down to change the radio channel. Next thing I knew, I rammed into a Chevy. Lucky no one was hurt."

Actually, my young marriage was hurt—because I was cheating Sandy of my full devotion. Although I'd vowed to commit my life to Sandy, I hadn't totally committed my eyes to her.

—Stephen Arterburn in Every Man's Battle

Respond:

What changes do I need to make in the way I look at women?

Thought to Apply:

Keep your eyes open before marriage, half shut afterwards.

—Benjamin Franklin (statesman, scientist, philosopher, 18th century)

0Prayer for the Week
