First Things First
Theme for the Week: Setting Priorities
Wednesday, August 8, 2001

Key Bible Verse: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33).
Bonus Reading: Matt. 6:25-34

A stunned husband whose wife had filed for divorce said to me, "I gave her everything a woman could want."

Wrong!

It's true that he gave her possessions in abundance. But what she wanted was him. She wanted attention from, and a relationship with, a husband who, unfortunately, was so immersed in his business that he had no time for his family. He learned too late the penalty of misplaced priorities.

Jesus made His statement about priorities [in today's Key Bible Verse] in response to the worries people had about material possessions. "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" they typically asked. Jesus never denied the importance of the things we own. He simply said that they shouldn't be our first priority.

So what's first in your life? We need God's wisdom to know who and what matters most.

Jesus said that when God is first and others are second, He will give us all we need from day to day (see Philippians 4:19). But if our priorities are out of order, then our emotional and spiritual lives will ultimately be chaotic.

—Michael B. Brown in God's Man

A time I experienced God providing for my needs was . …

Thought to Apply:

If worship is one thing we do, everything becomes mundane. If [it is] the one thing we do, [it all] takes on eternal significance.

—Tim Christenson
