Honestly, I don't know how I got the idea. But one morning I nervously approached Brenda, Bill's wife, who was secretary of the Religion Department.
"Do you think Dr. Lane might be able to give me some time?" I sheepishly asked.
"Why don't you go ask him," she said with a mischievous smile.
It was like going into the lion's den. I knocked. "Come!" answered a booming voice. He sat behind a desk piled high with books and papers.
"What can I do for you, Michael?"
He knew my name! I started by asking a question about a paper he'd assigned in class. It was only camouflage, however. He answered my question thoughtfully, then asked, "Anything else?"
"Would it be possible, I mean, could you give me perhaps a block of time?"
Without looking up he opened his briefcase and dug around for his Day-Timer. "How about Wednesday at 2:00?"
"That'd be great!" I walked out of his office elated. I'd been taken seriously by a person I highly regarded. If he thought I was worth a weekly hour of his time, then maybe I was worth something.
