Finding Your Focus
Theme for the Week: Setting Priorities
Clark Kellogg
Saturday, August 11, 2001

Q. With your public visibility, how do you juggle the personal and the professional?

A. This juggling "game" requires establishing priorities. There are a lot of "good" things. Yet what's "best" may require refraining from getting involved in them. The more opportunities you have to gain materially from your visibility, the more difficult it is to say no—especially if you aren't clear on your goals and priorities.

For example.

When my contract with ESPN expired in 1997, it had been a matter of prayer for my wife Rosie and me to have me on the road less. My work with the Indiana Pacers and ESPN required an average of three to five nights away from home each week during the basketball season. It disrupted any semblance of stability for us as a family.

That's when the opportunity with CBS presented itself. It called for studio work on weekends and less travel during the week. I'm thankful for this answer to prayer. Not only am I on the road less—a priority—but God has elevated me to a more high-profile position, and at a higher income level. But I wasn't looking for those. It was simply a matter of priorities.

How does a guy decide on his priorities?

Ask yourself: What are you looking to accomplish? To whom is your loyalty and allegiance directed? In my case, as a follower of Christ, he receives my loyalty and allegiance. Therefore my priorities —if I'm going to walk the talk—must line up with the allegiance that I publicly state.

Clark Kellogg is the lead studio analyst of the NCAA Tournaments for CBS Sports.
