Theme for the Week: The Job Market

Key Bible Verse: Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? (Isaiah 55:2).
Bonus Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-8

I thought he was a phony. Yes, he was a Christian, but he was unemployed, and he seemed just a bit too happy. I was visiting him because I'd heard about how he and other people in his congregation were living the gospel.

I spent several days with this man. I waited for him to crack. He'd been a stockbroker. Okay, he might have been "financially comfortable," but even if he was, I wondered whether he was like most men I have known and how much of his self-image was based not on who he was in Christ but on what he did "for a living."

I heard about this man's faith. I shared in the intense fellowship he had with others in his congregation. I witnessed his service to others. Finally,

I got it. In giving himself completely to God, he'd also completely opened himself to the fellowship of his congregation.

This man was not among the 70 percent of us who are anxious because we have less "job security" than we had a few years ago. This man and those with whom he was in fellowship had found security in God's promises to them through their fellowship with one another. They found delight, not in circumstances, but in God's promises.

—Doug Haugen in God's Man

Respond:

What must I alter if my sense of security is to become "circumstance-proof"?

Thought to Apply:

When a person finds no peace within himself it is useless to seek it elsewhere.

—Anonymous
