God, by the Numbers Theme for the Week: God Is God—Isaiah 40-66 Wayne Watson Saturday, August 25, 2001

Q. You maintain that regular church attenders often veer off course. What do you have in mind?
A. God has been found out and put on display for all to see. It's as if we view God as just another trophy. As members of this "all-aware" and somewhat arrogant generation, we've removed the veil of mystery from the Almighty and have proudly declared God understood.
Some of us have been studying Scripture all our lives. That's good! But when we take Scripture out of its eternal context and reduce it to a set of rules, we become filled with an unholy arrogance. More than a few times, I've thought to myself, Okay, I've done step one, step two, and step three; I've gone by all the rules and followed the ordersnow God has to do what I ask.
This attitude humanizes God, stripping Him of His majesty, His deity. What vanity to expect the creator of the universe to be subservient to our rules and demands!
What can we do about it?
While much of the believer's life is spent in pursuit of knowing about God, more time should be spent seeking to know Him. Rather than idolizing knowledge, we need to learn to trust Him with what little we do know and with all we don't know. While living out what we know from His Word, we must always leave room for the unseen, unexplainable, humanly unfathomable mysteries of God. Sure, this approach might take us humans down a couple of notches, but it will remind us that we're only clay in the Potter's hands.
