Remember What She Gives Up
Theme for the Week: Guarding Against an Affair
Friday, August 31, 2001

Key Bible Verse: So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth (Malachi 2:15).
Bonus Reading: Malachi 2:13-16

After years of marriage, I know what thrills Brenda. I once entered a bookstore, leaving her waiting in the car. I purchased a book, passing over the "good customer" limit to earn a five-dollar gift certificate. The cashier asked whether she should apply it to my current purchase, but I said, "No, I'll save it for my wife. She'll be real excited about it."

Just then, Brenda walked in. I whispered to the clerk, "Watch this!" I turned and gave the gift certificate to Brenda. She squealed out loud and, giggling, said, "Ooh, this is great!' The cashier laughed with me.

You see, I know Brenda. She's shared with me long-burning regrets and deepest fears she's told no one else.

Brenda gave up her freedom for me, relinquishing her right to seek happiness elsewhere. She exchanged this for something she considered more valuable: my love and my word. She's pledged to be mine sexually. Her sexuality is her most guarded possession, her secret garden. Her dreams of sharing, communication, and oneness are tied up in me. Brenda risked much in opening up so wide, and I must have a cherishing heart for that.

—Fred Stoeker in Every Man's Battle

Respond:

My wife risked and traded much to marry me. Was it a good bargain for her?

Thought to Apply:

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.

—Mignon McLaughlin (writer)
