Batting Cage Mentor
Theme for the Week: Mentoring
Mike Easler
Saturday, August 4, 2001

During his playing career, Mike Easler had a .293 batting average, and was a member of the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Now 50, his love for people shines through in his dealings with ballplayers on the St. Louis Cardinals.

Easler offers spiritual encouragement to fellow Christians and serves as a Bible resource. "Mike's always throwing Scripture around when I'm in the cage," said player J.D. Drew. "He's very knowledgeable about the Bible—I'm very impressed by it. It's a pick-me-up."

Q. How did you become a believer?

A. I first accepted Christ in 1975, while playing in the Houston Astros organization. Christians on the club, Bob Watson and Dave Roberts, helped me into a personal relationship with the Lord. For a few years I had ups and downs in my walk; but finally in 1981 my faith took root.

I became a more dedicated Christian. I started reading the Scriptures more, and this made my faith stronger.

Young Christians must desire the Word of God as milk—otherwise, they won't grow. If you don't feed on the Word of God, there's no way your spirit's going to grow.

How do you pass on more than advice on good batting mechanics to young players?

Your goal as an instructor is to get to know that young person and get the best out of him. When you're really concerned about him, he can pick up on that—he can tell when you're concerned, and not just blowing smoke. He knows if you really care. It's a day-by-day thing, to build up trust.

Mike Easler is hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Lord, I want to manage well what I've learned from others by purposefully passing it on.
