Once my wife and I invited Holiday Inns cofounder Bill Walton, who experienced a late-in-life conversion, to speak at an outreach dinner party. A Bible study I attend was to meet the following morning, so I invited Mr. Walton to join it.
Next morning, a group of about eight men, ages 30 to 45, assembled at our table. Each described in two or three minutes where he was on his spiritual pilgrimage.
As each man shared, I noticed Mr. Walton becoming more and more fidgety. Finally, it was his turn to speak. He said, "It's true that I helped build one of America's great corporations. But in order to do so
I arrived at the office every morning by 7 and rarely got home before 10 o'clock at night." His brow furrowed, and his lip quivered as he added, "I never saw a single Little League baseball game."
He paused and stared sadly into our faces as though he could see the future. Then, with trembling fists and booming voice, he roared, "I exhort you young men: Learn to live by biblical priorities!"
Men who fail usually fail because they didn't manage their priorities. Decide what to do on the basis of your priorities, not your pressures.
