Why the Drum Worked
Theme for the Week: Worshiping Together
Friday, July 13, 2001

Key Bible Verse: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).
Bonus Reading: Genesis 28:10-17

In Fairbanks, Alaska, for the World Eskimo Indian Olympics, our outreach team was concluding its orientation with an evening of praise and worship. The worship began with unified drumming by four men seated around a large powwow-style drum in the center of the room. As we sang, the drummers invited others to take a turn. My husband Richard, our two sons, and I took turns.

But then I noticed Daniel, our 11-year-old in the back of the room, crying, and went to see what was the matter.

"I don't know what's wrong," he kept repeating. A light dawned. We took Daniel outside and explained to him that sometimes, in worship, we cry when God's spirit touches our hearts. Over the next 15 minutes we shared the gospel with Daniel, and listened as he opened his life to Jesus, stepping into His kingdom.

"You know," Daniel now ventured, "I really felt like crying when I was playing the big drum.""Richard said that before the drummers began, they'd prayed over the drum, asking that the Holy Spirit would use its music to draw people closer to Jesus.

"Well," Daniel replied, "I guess it worked, didn't it?"

Thought to Apply:

Worship does not satisfy our hunger for God; it whets our appetite.

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, we thank Thee that we can come to Thee just as we are. But remind us that we dare not leave as we came.
