Men of Integrity, Jul/Aug 2001

Hi-Yo Silver!

Theme for the Week: Agreeing with God
Sunday, July 22

Key Bible Verse: Do not be like the horse or the mule, which. … must be controlled by bit and bridle (Psalm 32:9).
Bonus Reading: Psalm 119:65-72

Remember the Lone Ranger's horse? That animal was so smart it was scary. You never saw the Lone Ranger yanking on the reins. Some-times you'd see him shooting at the bad guys with a gun in each hand. He didn't have to hold on to Silver. Silver knew exactly what to do. That's godliness: when you obey the Master's voice without Him having to make you obey.

But Silver wasn't always like that. In the first episode of The Lone Ranger, the hero was a Texas Ranger who survived a massacre but was left for dead. In a canyon he found a great white, wild stallion. When the Lone Ranger began riding Silver, he jumped and bucked. The Lone Ranger hung on. Silver kept bucking. Eventually, the Lone Ranger broke Silver of resisting his will. Once broken, the Lone Ranger could use him.

God loves you so much He's not going to give up on you. He loves you just the way you are, but He loves you too much to leave you that way. He's going to stay on your back until you're broken and say, "Lord, now what do you want me to do?"

—Kenneth G. Ulmer in Spiritually Fit to Run the Race

O Lord … give us such a mighty love to Thee as may sweeten all our obedience.

—Benjamin Jenks
