Men of Integrity, Jul/Aug 2001

Safety Cones
Theme for the Week: Agreeing with God
Monday, July 23

Key Bible Verse: "Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord who makes you holy" (Leviticus 20:8).
Bonus Reading: Deuteronomy 5:32-33

Pulling into the Hardee's, I saw five telephone repair trucks parked, with bright orange cones behind each truck. Inside, the men were sitting around a table, talking and laughing. Heading past them with my food, I said, "Excuse me, why do you put the cones behind your trucks?"

One man laughed and said, "We'd get fired if we didn't. It's the rule." Then he added, "Seriously, we can't see very well behind these trucks. Putting the cone directly in our path every time we park forces us to look before we back out."

Another repairman broke in. "Several weeks ago one of our men driving a truck that carries the big buckets stopped for lunch. When it was time to leave, he walked to the back to pick up his cone. Under the left rear wheel, was a small boy who'd gotten away from his mother just a few seconds before." The man shook his head. "If that guy hadn't had a cone behind his truck . …"

The men finished their coffee and returned to their trucks. At the rear of his vehicle, each looked underneath then picked up the cone.

—Mark Sutton & Bruce Hennigan in Conquering Depression

Respond:
What "orange cones" can I place in my life to protect me from worldly evil and my own vulnerabilities?

Thought to Apply:
We must do the thing we must/before the thing we may; we are not fit for any trust/till we can and do obey.

—George Macdonald (Scottish writer)
