Men of Integrity, Jul/Aug 2001

Still Following the Napkin
Theme for the Week: Agreeing with God
Wednesday, July 25

Key Bible Verse: "Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them" (John 13:17).
Bonus Reading: James 1:22-5

Roger graduated, became a deacon at a local church, married, then entered a South Carolina Seminary. His fellow students urged him to go into something else. They told him, "Roger, you can't preach with your voice."

He'd simply say, "Look, all I know is God called me to do this. I'm just being obedient."

During his last year at seminary, I visited Roger. He told me that he'd just gone before the local presbytery to be licensed as a ministerial candidate. As he shared his testimony, a man walked into the back of the room. After listening to Roger for a few minutes, he leaned over and whispered to the chairman, "I can fix it."

He was an ear/nose/throat specialist, part of a select group of Americans that had just spent several days at Harvard Medical School with a Japanese physician, who shared his discovery of a way to give full speech back to people like Roger. The doctor took Roger on as his guinea pig, at no cost.

A few months later, my phone rang at home. "Hi Paul, this is Roger."

"Roger who?" I couldn't place the voice. Then it hit me. His voice was deep. Roger would be able to preach the gospel.

—Paul Tokunaga in Faith on the Edge

Respond:
Am I willing to persevere in obedience even if things don't turn out "okay"?

Thought to Apply:
Our task is not to decipher how all life's pieces fit. … but to remain faithful and obedient to Him who knows all mysteries.<

—James Dobson
