Men of Integrity, Jul/Aug 2001

Family Resemblance
Theme for the Week: Agreeing with God
Thursday, July 26

Key Bible Verse: And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Bonus Reading: Romans 8:28-29

Ever noticed how couples who've been married for a long time start to look alike? Twelve years ago, when a full-blooded Japanese friend of mine, Rob Takemura, married a fair-skinned redhead named Jill, we joked, "Now Rob and Jill will start to look alike."

Rob and Jill remain my wife's and my closest friends. But during a stretch when we lived in Virginia, a year could pass without us seeing them—though we kept in touch by letter and phone. One Christmas, they sent us a close-up photo of just the two of them, and guess what? The resemblance was uncanny!

How does this happen? Researchers from Yale University studied this phenomenon and determined that people who live with each other for a long time often begin to unconsciously mimic each other's facial expression. This becomes a form of "facial body-building," literally shaping the way we look, so that even Rob and Jill could start to look alike.

In the same way, as we practice the attitudes and virtues of Christ, we're transformed to look like Him. They shape our spirits and souls until, however faintly, we begin to resemble our Lord.

—Gary Thomas in Sacred Marriage

Thought to Apply:
The fruit of the Spirit grows only in the garden of obedience.
