How to Mix Religion and Politics
Theme for the Week: The Stuff of Leadership
Henry Blackaby
Monday, July 2, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith (Hebrews 13:7).
Bonus Reading: Nehemiah 5

Ernest Manning grew up on a homestead farm in Canada, came to Christ as a teen, and trained at a Bible institute run by radio evangelist William Aberhart. After graduation, Manning's compassion for people's plight during the depression led him into politics and a platform of social responsibility with political accountability. Manning succeeded Aberhart on the air after his death.

Manning was elected premier of Alberta in 1943. He governed his province for the next 25 years, winning seven consecutive elections. His administration was free of corruption. "His moral standing, juxtaposed with his popularity," wrote the Calgary Herald, "made him politically invincible, due in part, to his inheritance of Aberhart's religious torch."

Manning's rare combination of intelligence and honesty deeply affected his son, Preston, who grew up to lead a national political party reflecting his father's passions.

Manning's relationship with God gave him the wisdom to effectively combine Christianity and social action. He led his people to social, fiscal, and political responsibility, and through his weekly radio messages led multitudes into God's presence.

—Henry Blackaby in The Man God Uses

Respond:

Would my integrity stand up to public scrutiny?

Thought to Apply:

Never has a man who has bent himself been able to make others straight.
