Pump Primer Theme for the Week: Mentoring Bill Lane Tuesday, July 31, 2001
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior (Titus 1:4). Bonus Reading: Philippians 2:19-24
Have you met your young man yet?" my wife, Brenda, would ask. I'd say, "Not yet, but timing is of the Lord," knowing that I'd imposed a condition on my prayer: he must take the initiative and ask for a block of time with me.
I first met Michael [Card] in my Life of Paul class at Western Kentucky University. The quality of his questions alerted me that he was bright and eager to learn. Our times of walking and talking together became the high point of my week, as we grew in our readiness to listen to, and be honest with, each other.
Michael soon joined a small congregation I led. It had begun with only 13 members, singing a capella because no one could play an instrument. Gradually, gifted students joined us and began to respond creatively to the preaching. Consequently, we enjoyed original music nearly every Sunday.
One Sunday morning after Easter, I remember preaching on John 21. The next Tuesday I found on my desk the lyrics for "Stranger on the Shore," a song later released on Michael's first album, First Light. I thank God for the privilege of being the water that primed Michael's pump.
Bill Lane in The Walk Respond:
Have I found a high point in my week through a deliberate relationship? Thought to Apply:
The teacher is like the candle which lights others in consuming itself.
