Theme for the Week: The Stuff of Leadership
Chris Wood, John DeMont & John Geddes
Wednesday, July 4, 2001

Key Bible Verse: But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect (1 Corinthians 15:10). Bonus Reading: Romans 12:3-8

Handsome, athletic, and quietly confident, Greg McNabb is the sort of native officer Canadian police forces are falling over one another to recruit. His beat is north central Regina, much of its young, booming native population mired in unemployment and blighted by alcohol and drug addiction.

McNabb, whose late father was a Dakota-Sioux, whose mother is a proud Metis, and whose stepfather is a Cree chief, declines to talk much about what it means to be one of 19 natives among the Regina Police Service's 319 officers. "Those things are fine," his mother explains, "but we still have to make a living in a white man's world." She passed on to Greg a simple ethos: seek no special treatment, work hard.

So far this shift, McNabb and his partner have encountered prostitutes and thugs, hauled in a belligerent 20-year-old drunk to sober up in jail, and cooled down an apartment party threatening to boil over. Each incident involved young aboriginals. How does McNabb cope with it night after night? "You think of yourself as a police officer, not as a native person." That approach makes him popular among his fellow officers.

—Chris Wood, John DeMont & John Geddes in Maclean's

Respond:

Do I blame my circumstances, or simply work harder to overcome them?

Thought to Apply:

There are no shortcuts in life—only those we imagine.

—Frank Leahy (football coach)
