Key Bible Verse: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are.
are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness" (Matthew 6:22-23). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 4:20-27
Vladimir K. Zuorykin, a Russian immigrant working as an engineer for Westing-house, patented his television tube in 1923. In a 1981 interview, the inventor expressed amazement at TV's impact. "The technique is wonderful, the color beyond my expectation," he admitted. But Zuorykin said, "It's awful what they're doing with the subject matter. I'd never let my children come close to this thing."
In a survey of 208 inmates at Michigan's maximum security prison in Marquette, 90 percent said they improved their criminal talents by watching television; 40 percent said they'd actually attempted crimes they'd first seen on TV.
There are an estimated 190 million TV sets in the U.S. I recently visited a home that had five-one in each bedroom, one in the family room, one on the kitchen table!
Reading and I.Q. tests show a pattern: The more TV viewing, the lower the scores. In one town that only recently began to get TV reception, pupils' scores fell off sharply within two years.
