Jazz and Ice Cream Theme for the Week: Redemptive Relationships David Seamands Monday, October 1, 2001
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). Bonus Reading: Colossians 4:2-6
A handsome young man knocked at the door of our Bangalore, India, home. A graduate electronics student interested in American jazz, he'd heard about my record collection. I invited him in. Within minutes we were listening to Glenn Miller classics from the big band era and eating Helen's fridge-made ice cream.
Our friendship with this lonely youth, far from his wealthy, high-caste Hindu family, blossomed. His visits continued more than a year, with no mention of religion.
Then one night, as we listened to the "King of Swing," Benny Goodman, he suddenly asked, "Brother David, what does it mean to be a Christian?" I explained briefly, then loaned him a C. S. Lewis book and an E. Stanley Jones tape.
In our ensuing discussions, he was concerned not to deny the good things his parents had taught him. I assured him that to receive Jesus Christ wasn't to deny their ethical teaching, but to find in Him its true fulfillment.
Finally one night he surrendered to Christ. A few months later he was baptizedand immediately disinherited by his orthodox Hindu family.
David Seamands in Healing Meditations for Life My Response:
Which of my interests could God use to reach out to those not yet part of His kingdom? Thought to Apply:
Before you can convince a man of anything, you must first convince him that you are his true friend.
