Nobody Cried, Of Course
Theme for the Week: Unstuffing Our Emotions
Bryan R. Salminen
Monday, October 15, 2001

Key Bible Verse: My tears have been my food day and night. … I used to go. … with shouts of joy (Psalm 42: 3-4):
Bonus Reading: Psalm 42:1-5

Four guys are sitting around a table, drinking beer, and making fun of the candidates in the next election.

But their laughter ends abruptly as one of them tells his friends about watching his son play tennis in a state tournament. "I couldn't believe the way my little guy was so self-assured and composed out there," he says. "I was so proud of the way he handled himself. I didn't care if he won the match or not—I just couldn't believe what class he showed." Tears come to the man's eyes as his voice chokes with feeling.

His friends are utterly still, riveted by his story. Each man relates to this experience in his own way.

One man reaches over and affectionately punches his friend on the arm.

A second man's lip trembles and his foot thumps nervously.

The fingernails of the third man's left hand dig into his palm, his eyes blink rapidly, and he breathes deeply. He's been intensely moved not only by his friend's story, but by feelings of regret that he didn't have children of his own and will never know what it feels like to look with pride on a son or daughter.

—Bryan R. Salminen in No Ordinary Men

My Response:

What I stand to gain when I take a risk and let what I feel show is . …

Thought to Apply:

Crying opens the lungs, washes the countenance, exercises the eyes, and softens the temper. So cry on.

—Mr. Bumble (in Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist)

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, let me grow to be—like David and Jonathan—a whole man: physically and mentally strong, emotionally expressive.
