A Better Investment
Theme for the Week: Beyond the American Dream
Monday, September 24

Key Bible Verse: So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well (2 Corinthians 12:15).
Bonus Reading: 2 Cor. 9:12-15

I still remember a stunning story about Peter Lynch, the originator of the Fidelity Magellan Fund, perhaps the most popular mutual fund in history. Lynch was a Wall Street master. But he announced a surprising turn in his life at age 48. He retired.

Lynch said, "My father died young. I don't want to die at my desk." He was then asked what he was going to do. Many thought he would announce becoming a consultant.

Instead, he said he was going to work in his church with kids: "Kids are a great investment. They beat the hell out of stocks."

Lynch's knowledge of life, his passion for the good, and his desire to build skills to reach kids put investing on a whole new level. Most of us think of investing as "What do I get out of it?" But a more enlightened form of investing—that done out of a spirit of goodness and righteousness—asks "How can I invest in the common good?"

Aristotle said that part of liberality was spending rightly on fine objects. In Lynch's case, he discovered a group of fine objects called America's youth. Suddenly valuing others places a new value on one's time and treasures.

My Response:
Here's how I'd like to adjust what I'm investing my time and energies in:

Thought to Apply:
It's easy to make a buck; it's harder to make a difference.
