Men of Integrity, Sep/Oct 2001

This Is a Test
Theme for the Week: Beyond the American Dream
Wednesday, September 26

Key Bible Verse: Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is. … not on earthly things (Colossians 3:1-2).
Bonus Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

My wife, son Tim, and I attended the wedding rehearsal dinner of dear friends. It was past eleven before there was a break in the festivities. I walked out of the building for a breath of air and looked across the street to where I'd parked on arriving. I remembered having parked behind Tim. His car was there, but behind it loomed a large Buick-shaped empty space!

Our minds are supposed to bring stability to our Christian experience as they counterbalance an often initially faulty reaction by our senses. I began to use my mind; I concluded my car had been stolen. Next I was able to assess my emotions: I was pleased to discover in my own heart neither anger nor panic. Happily, I realized that the truths that I'd professed—that all our possessions belong to God, that we're merely stewards of them, and that God will provide for our needs—were things I really believed. My mind had brought stability to my emotions. The disclosure proved a pleasant one even though the loss of the vehicle wasn't. Believe me, there was a time when I would have reacted differently to having my car stolen.

—Doug McIntosh in Life's Greatest Journey

My Response:
I think I'm beginning to put my biblically informed mind over my natural reactions in the area of . …

Thought to Apply:
Things are to be used and God is to be loved. We get into trouble when we begin to use God and love things.

—Jay Kesler (pastor and educator)
