Friend to the End Theme for the Week: Hearts that Serve
Tuesday, September 4, 2001
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: If one part suffers, every part suffers with it (1 Corinthians 12:26). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:21-27
Henry was initially stunned when he heard that his closest friend, Ted, had contracted the HIV virus and now had full-blown AIDS. The two of them had been pals since elementary school. Ted was in his third year of engineering school, but now had to withdraw as he fell victim to the ever-increasing symptoms of AIDS.
Henry went straight to his doctor and learned all he could about the AIDS virus and the process of dying that Ted was going through. His heart opened up to new depths of compassion that he never knew existed.
As Henry began to enter into a new stage of their friendship, he discovered that so often he felt helpless when he was in Ted's presence.
Ted was patient with him as he taught Henry all he could about how to love and care for him as he slowly entered into the valley of the shadow of death.
Henry began to pay a relational price as his friendship with Ted took more and more of his time and energy. But the more Henry gave to Ted the richer his compassion became.

My Response:
What's keeping me from serving someone in a way that would stretch me?
Thought to Apply:
I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.
