Key Bible Verse: "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak" (Acts 20:35). Bonus Reading: Acts 20:17-19, 33-35
David Smith's life was altered immeasurably in 1978 when his father, at age 34, died in a home electrical accident. David was only 9. Helpless to revive his dad, he purposed to one day bring health and healing to others. He grew spiritually strong as a young man, and in 1996, while still a student, God called him to start a medical clinic to serve the needy in his hometown of McComb, Mississippi. He was still in his medical residency in Jackson (100 miles away) and had no financial resources.
After a discouraging search and no good leads for a location. David felt the Lord impress upon him to go at once to St. Andrews United Methodist Church. There he found Earnestine Varnado, church secretary and parish nurse. Smith had never met Varnado, but she'd been praying for a free clinic for McComb. Within a matter of days, the two visionaries conducted their first free health clinic at St. Andrews. In the clinic's first two years of operation, he and other volunteers have treated some 160 patients who have no insurance or Medicaid, or who face other circumstances that qualify them for the free or low-cost services.
