Dream House Nightmare
Theme for the Week: Beyond the American Dream
Patrick Morley
Sunday, September 23, 2001

Key Bible Verse: "If I. … said to pure gold, 'You are my security,'. … I would have been unfaithful to God on high (Job 31:24, 28).
Bonus Reading: Luke 12:13-21

For seven years I watched John and Betty struggle with lifestyle issues. They sincerely wanted the peace that comes from knowing Christ personally. But their material appetites produced constant tension.

They lived in a comfortable home but clutched the hope of buying their dream house. John knew the payments weren't manageable, but Betty seemed so anxious. Two years ago they bought a real showplace.

John worked hard enough, but Betty honestly believed he was unambitious. When he worked on Christian tasks, Betty felt John was copping out on his responsibility to work and save for the family they talked of starting.

Last summer Betty visited her parents for a few weeks. One day she phoned home and said. "I've taken a job."

"What does that mean?" John asked, stunned.

Betty responded not in terms of their relationship, but of her ambition to earn more money. Now they've filed for divorce. They'll lose the house to the mortgage company.
