The Betrayal of Big Red
Theme for the Week: Beyond the American Dream
Bob DeMoss
Tuesday, September 25, 2001

Key Bible Verse: I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation (Philippians 4:12).
Bonus Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6-10

In 1993, I bought my off-road dream machine: an Aztec red, 4x4 Nissan Pathfinder. Single at the time, I'd find a buddy on weekends and go four-wheeling in the Rocky Mountains.

Three years later, Nissan mailed me a postcard proclaiming the arrival of the completely redesigned 1996 Pathfinder. An ad campaign flooded the media. A videotape arrived at my home. I started to get picky with my '93. Would you look at that? The armrest's getting worn! What's that noise? A small squeak developed somewhere underneath.

In 1998, I could stand it no longer. I went to the dealer showroom and betrayed my '93 by leasing the latest and greatest. I was now married and had moved to Nashville, where snow is rarely an issue. Who needed the 4x4 feature? The top-of-the-line 4x2 would do. Leather, you bet.

Would you believe that within three days I got stuck in that lousy 4x2? A few wet leaves in a field left me spinning grass.

Over the past two-and-a-half years, at least once a week I've wished I had my old Pathfinder back. I'm mad at myself because I could have been driving a perfectly fine vehicle—with no payments.

—Bob DeMoss in HomeLife

My Response:

I could boost contentment by "hitting the mute button" for which commercials and ads?

Thought to Apply:

If I wanted to bring a nation to its knees, I would give it so much that it became miserable, greedy, and sick.

—Adlai Stevenson (political figure, 20th century)
