All Jerry Wanted Theme for the Week: Redemptive Relationships Steve Brown Sunday, September 30, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another (Romans 13:8). Bonus Reading: Romans 13:9-10
Jerry Falwell was invited by Marc Tanenbaum, international interreligious affairs director for the American Jewish Committee, to address a national gathering of conservative rabbis at a Miami Beach hotel. Sitting in the audience, I heard angry criticisms of Dr. Tanenbaum for inviting this right-wing, fundamentalist preacher.
But as Falwell spoke, the rabbis' crossed arms unfolded and their frowns turned to smiles. Soon they were leaning forward to listen. His love for them and what they stood for was apparent. His speech was interrupted several times by applause.
During the question-and-answer session that followed, Falwell was asked, "What do you want from us?" Falwell's astounding answer: "I don't want anything from you. I have everything I need and want. I've come to tell you that I am going to be your friend. Even if you don't want me to be, I'm still going to be your friend. I've come to tell you that I love you. Even if you don't want me to, I'm still going to love you. That's the only reason I came."
