Hitting My Stride Theme for this Week: Tapping in to God's Power
Friday, December 14

Key Bible Verse: Dear brothers, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy (James 1:2).
Bonus Reading: James 1:3-4

The other day, as I started my training run for a half-marathon, I was caught up in problems at The [counseling] Center. The first couple of miles I heaped one negative thought on another, making mental mincemeat of a couple of people—and on myself for my reaction to things they'd said. Then I realized I was demonstrating the same behavior as those I'm committed to helping!

I decided to change my attitude. I picked up my pace and got my heart rate up. Then I said a prayer, asking God to forgive me for indulging in an attitude of despair and complaint. I started to count my blessings—thanking God for my wife, for the beautiful Northwest where I live. I started reciting the names of my friends who care about me, and prayed for each of them, one by one.

By now I was cruising—picking 'em up and laying 'em down. Everything suddenly came together for me—the physical, emotional, and spiritual. When I came home, I felt taller and stronger inside and out. Gone were my earlier complaints—still to be dealt with, but now with a different attitude. In their place was a spirit of gratitude.
