Overcoming Adversity
Theme for this Week: Tapping in to God's Power
Saturday, December 15
Q. How does someone overcome adversity?
A. Recognizing that your adversity isn't the only adversity in the world helps you deal with it in a healthy, persistent manner. Typically the resolution is a process that forces you to continue to chip away while keeping your eye on the big picture. You can't be overwhelmed by a seeming lack of progress.
How has this worked out in your life?
At 26 years old, I was in the prime of an NBA career starting to flourish when it abruptly ended due to injuries. To have basketball taken away and yet through that process discover a personal relationship with God through Christ has fortified, strengthened, and blessed me beyond what I ever imagined. Sure, my playing days were over, but at some point that was going to happen anyway. So I decided to go in another direction and try to apply the things I learned while playing basketballdiscipline, hard work, sacrifice, teamworkin another avenue. It turned out to be broadcasting.
For me the right attitude for overcoming adversity is simply knowing that my future belongs to God. My relationship with Him enhances and fortifies every other aspect of my life. That's really given me a sense of gratitude, purpose, and significance. Even though basketball gave me a lot as a player, I didn't have those other elements in place. Quite honestly, as much as I dream of being on the court again, if I could rewind the clock, I don't think I'd change a thing based on what's come out of that period.
