Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2001

Fear of Flying
Theme for this Week: Object of Trust
Sunday, December 16

Key Bible Verse: It is better to trust the Lord than to put confidence in people (Psalm 118:8).
Bonus Reading: Psalm 118:5-9

The chief pilot of a major airline is a member of the church I pastored. One day Maynard Watkins said to me, "Steve, I'm going to help you with your fear of flying. Set aside two evenings, and I'll take you to our training facilities and let you see what it's all about."

During those two fascinating evenings, I went through the pilots' flight safety training, learned about emergency procedures, and even got to fly a DC-10 simulator.

When it was over, May-nard asked, "Now, Pastor, don't you feel a whole lot better about flying?"

I replied, "I never knew so much could go wrong with a plane, Maynard, but I do feel better about flying. Know why?" When he allowed that he didn't, I said, "Because of you. I've watched your competence and skill. If men like you are in charge of the planes in which I fly, then I feel a whole lot better."

It's the same with almost all the fears Christians must face. God is in charge, and when you know Him, it makes all the difference in the world.
