Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2001

In The Dark
Theme for this Week: Object of Trust
Friday, December 21

Key Bible Verse: What a wonderful God we have! How great are his riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his methods! (Romans 11:33).
Bonus Reading: Job 11:7-9

A tourist to Brussels was eager to see how and where some of the world's renowned lace was manufactured. His guide took him to a small, unassuming building where he was introduced to the plant manager. After a brief explanation, he was directed to the basement workroom, where the only light came through several narrow windows near the top of the exterior wall, slightly above street level. Taped to the windows were exquisite, intricate patterns. The workers sat at tables facing the windows, working in relative darkness. The visitor, accustomed to our well-lit workspaces, asked why there was so little light. The manager responded, "Centuries of experience have taught us that the finest lace is produced when the workers are in the dark and the pattern is in the light."

We often find ourselves in the dark, without the explanation we wish we had. The pattern, however, remains in the light. It's a pattern that has stood the text of time and countless human questions. When we don't understand God's activity, we can rest in His character and have confidence in God. Although we don't understand it all, He does. And that's enough.

—John Stumbo in Preaching Today

My Response:
A "missing" piece in my life puzzle I'm willing to trust God with is . …

Thought to Apply:
Faith means trusting in advance what will only make sense in reverse.

—Philip Yancey
