Key Bible Verse: "'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart .
' And, 'Love your neighbor as yourself'" (Luke 10:27). Bonus Reading: Luke 10:25-37
When I was 14, God sent a white Christian man into my life. Gary Chapman showed me what it means to live a Christian lifestyle. Two years later on a youth retreat, God used Gary to introduce me to Him-self, when I accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. I didn't realize it at the time, but Gary may have risked his job by having a friendship with a black boy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 1968. Racial tension was high.
Soon after Gary introduced me to Jesus, he left the church he was serving. Not long after, the church hired a new youth minister. One night the new youth minister short, bald, and with a "serious" military attitudetold us it was God's will for blacks and whites to worship separately. I was devastated! How could Gary have reached out to me when this man was telling me I couldn't worship with him? Besides, I'd brought my best friend, Jamesnot yet a Christianto the youth group. I thought he'd never accept Christ after hearing that statement. (Eventually he did on his own. God is good!)
