Kin Beneath the Skin
Theme for this Week: It's Mutual
Bruce Bickel & Stan Jantz
Monday, December 24, 2001

Key Bible Verse: Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters (Galatians 6:10).
Bonus Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22

Benny Smith, a reporter for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, lives in an upstairs apartment. Below him live Bob and Lib Wood, seventy-something retirees. Good conversations shared during Benny's frequent visits strengthened their friendship. Occasionally he helped them move furniture or program their VCR.

At 1:00 A.M. one morning, the ring of his phone awakened Benny. It was Lib. She frantically explained that Bob was having trouble breathing. Benny dressed in an instant, bounded downstairs, assisted Bob into the car, and drove the Woods to the hospital emergency room. There, Bob was whisked into a treatment area, accompanied by Lib.

After a three-hour wait, Benny approached the clerk for an update on Bob's condition. She said such information could only be given to a family member. Without intending to be deceitful, and based on the closeness of his relationship, Benny replied: "But I am family!" Since Benny's face is black and the Woods' faces are white, the clerk's skeptical expression wasn't surprising. Just then, Bob and Lib appeared and told Benny that Bob's problem wasn't serious. Right there they did a group hug.
