Men of Integrity, Nov/Dec 2001

Feeling Relaxed Yet?
Theme for the Week: Mind Food
Thursday, November 1

Key Bible Verse: Their god is their appetite. … But we are citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:19-20, NLT).
Bonus Reading: Philippians 3:17-4:1

Television may seem to be a relaxing behavior—40 percent of Americans' leisure time is spent glued to the tube. Yet studies indicate that we actually feel less relaxed and satisfied after a few hours watching TV than we did before.

It's easy to become emotionally exhausted from everything going on around you. While it's noble to believe you possess the resources to solve each problem that arises, it's probably not realistic.

Ask yourself: What activities can I jettison to make room for things and people that will nourish my spirit? Where should I put my energies so that I don't dissipate my strength?

You may need to start with eliminating extraneous information about events and people beyond your influence to change—which may mean reducing the amount of television you watch with its stories of economic turmoil, mayhem, and murder.

—Gregory L. Jantz in Becoming Strong Again

My Response:
My weekly schedule would be improved if I squeezed out . …

Thought to Apply:
We live in a strange society where we make. … movie idols out of organized crime members [and] criminals who beat the system.

—Erma Bombeck

Forgive me, Lord, for loving the world too much. Set my affections on You and help me to recognize and resist the temptations of television.
