Remember the 1986 film, "Hoosiers"? The story followed a high school basketball coach who molded the raw talent from Hickory, Indiana, into a winning team that went all the way to the state finals. As the team of "country boys" walked into the enormous arena where they'd face Butler High, their jaws dropped. The first thing Coach Norman Dale (acted by Gene Hackman) did was ask one of his players to measure the distance from the line behind the basket to the free throw line.
"Fifteen feet," said his player.
Next the coach asked his shortest player to climb on the shoulders of the tallest and measure the distance from the basketball rim to the floor. "Ten feet."
The coach looked at his players and grinned. "Just like home."
It was a defining moment. The colors painted on the floor, the numbers of seats in the arena, the acoustics—all might vary from place to place. But the game hadn't changed. They had practiced on a court just like this one. Without even saying the words, the coach was cheering his team on: "You can do it. You can do it here!"
