Why the Businessman Exploded
Theme for this Week: Getting Vocal
Sherwood Wirt

Key Bible Verse: How can they hear about him unless someone tells them? (Romans 10:14).
Bonus Reading: Romans 10:9-15

My assigned topic for leading our church's adult discussion group was "Christianity in the Work-place." When I asked for examples of a Christian's behavior in the workplace, participants mentioned honesty, loyalty, high moral standards, compassion, dedication to one's job, and friendliness.

"These are all fine traits," I said, "but can we say they're exclusively Christian? Don't non-Christians do these things as well? Are good deeds the only way we express our faith in the workplace?" I suggested that we also express our faith by talking about it, by telling others.

"That'll turn people off," one participant said.

"Maybe it depends on how we do it," I replied.

"Discussing your faith in your workplace is like throwing a lighted match into a pool of gasoline!" thundered an outstanding member of our business community. "My faith is expressed by what I do, not by what I say!"

I responded with Elton Trueblood's assertion that people who declare they can witness to their faith purely by their deeds are insufferably self-righteous—no one is that good. There are times when faith must be expressed in words.
