Viewer Discretion
Theme for the Week: Mind Food
Bob DeMoss
Saturday, November 3, 2001

Q. Last year, the American Medical Association reported a direct link between violence on TV, in music, video games, and movies and increased violent behavior among children. Do you think Hollywood will change the content of what it produces?

A. It's unlikely, because it makes money at it. We believers have known for decades that this kind of entertainment doesn't belong in our homes. Yet Christian teens and preteens are just as likely to watch graphic horror films as their unchurched counterparts. Why? Because their parents have failed to raise God's standard of discernment in the home. If we Christians don't clean up our act, why should Hollywood?

Likewise, why should TV and music producers cut back on the endless stream of sexual content when we willingly permit such ungodly displays in our homes? We subsidize immoral entertainment each time we pay our monthly cable bill, buy an inappropriate CD, or use poor judgment in our video rentals.

What can I do about it?

Pray this simple prayer every day: "Lord help me to love what You love and hate what You hate."

Make your home a place where sound, biblically based media choices abound. Where taking a stand for righteousness is a way of life. Your family can say with David, "I will refuse to look at anything vile or vulgar" (Psalm 101:3)—not because the medical community is concerned about the consequences, but because Jesus is worthy to be honored with such choices.

0Prayer for the Week

Forgive me, Lord, for loving the world too much. Set my affections on You and help me to recognize and resist the temptations of television.
