Men of Integrity, January/February 2002

Keeping Victoria's Secret
Theme for this Week: Defense!
Tuesday, February 5

Key Bible Verse: "I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust upon a young woman" (Job 31:1). Bonus Reading: 1 John 2:15-17

Lingerie advertisements were my major enemy. Or, even worse, a swimsuit feature or exercise feature illustrated with bun-fitting spandex all around. I trained my eyes to bounce away from such print ads immediately. I went further. I established rules to keep those images out of my hands before my eyes had a chance to see them.

  • Rule 1: When my hand reached for a magazine or insert, if I sensed in the slightest way that my underlying motive was to see something sensual, I forfeited my right to pick up that item. Forever.

  • Rule 2: If a magazine or catalog had an overtly sensual female on the cover, I tore it off and threw it away. Once I remember Brenda asking, "What's been happening to all our magazine covers?" But that's how I handled the problem, and today she happily grants me full censorship rights!

  • Rule 3: If I was genuinely looking for sale prices on camping equipment or tools in department store inserts, I'd allow myself to pick up the insert but force myself to start from the back. The lingerie ads are usually on opening pages. By starting at the back, I avoided seeing the young models entirely.

—Fred Stoeker in Every Man's Battle

My Response: A rule I need to make for myself if I'm to keep Job's covenant is …

Thought to Apply: To read the papers and the magazines you would think we were almost worshiping the female bosom.
—Billy Graham (evangelist)
