What My Tombstone Tells Me Theme for this Week: Growing Old Is an Oxymoron Sunday February 17
Key Bible Verse: Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered (Psalm 39:4). Bonus Reading:Psalm 39: 57
When I die, if I live to be 80, my tombstone will read 19482028. I challenge you to project your own death date. Do it right now. Now, from this small bit of information we can learn a lot:
- The first date says that we were born. The Creator saw fit to give us the precious gift of life. It reminds us to appreciate our lives.
- The dash between the dates is short. It reminds us that life's an inch.
- The second date denotes a certain inevitability to death. Each setting sun puts us 24 hours closer to "that day." It reminds us to invest our time wisely.
Our tombstones tell us that, while human nature remains unchanged, the rest of our lives will be lived in a century with a global economy, exploding technologies, and culture wars. That means we ought to regear ourselves for our moment in history.
Our tombstones tell us we probably have quite a few miles left to travel. It makes us wonder, Which roads will I take? Will they lead to victory or defeat?
