Theme for this Week: Growing Old Is an Oxymoron

Key Bible Verses: The Lord has kept me alive and well … So I'm asking you to give me the hill country (Joshua 14:10, 12). Bonus Reading:Joshua 14: 6–14

At a retirement banquet, they read the litany of professional accomplishments for a man who'd served as a pastor and educator. Most had occurred after he was 50. In fact, during a "toast" someone observed that it looked like he'd coasted until midlife. "During the first 25 professional years," the honoree responded, "I was just gaining momentum."

"Retirement," he added, "isn't the checkered flag indicating the race is over, it's when I can lighten my load to travel faster. I'm not retiring to quit working, but to focus on my real passions of teaching, writing, and preaching."

In automobile racing, the experienced driver often reaches his highest speeds during the final laps. Ideally, the driver tries not to carry surplus fuel in the tank. Unused fuel only slows the car down in the most critical stage of the race. In the last few laps, there may be a few dents on the body of the automobile, and the tires may have less tread, but too much is at stake to coast.

In the second half of my life, I want to use all the fuel God's given me, so I can increase my effectiveness, serving God with passion until my last breath.

My Response: Something I could really get into outside my work routine is …

Thought to Apply: You're getting over the hill when most of your dreams are reruns.
