Rent-A-Wreck
Theme for this Week: For Example
Thursday, January 10, 2002

Key Bible Verse: After all, what gives us hope and joy, and what is our proud reward and crown? It is you! (1 Thessalonians 2:19). Bonus Reading:Ephesians 5:1–2

David Schwartz never intended to get in the used car business. But David bought a car from a friend, then sold it for a $200 profit. It was so easy, he tried it again. Before long he was a university graduate with a small used car business. David believed in the power of truth. If a car needed work, he told the customer about it up front, and priced it accordingly.

One day a woman asked him to rent her a used car. He explained that he wasn't insured for that sort of transaction. She said, "Well, then sell it to me for three months, and I'll bring it back when I'm finished with it." He agreed, and the woman brought the car back as promised. Then he had an idea: Why not rent used cars to budget-minded customers?

David applied the same values he'd always followed—truth, integrity, and sincerity. Rent-A-Wreck car rental service was launched, and its franchises spread rapidly across the United States.

David says, "I believe that any enterprise, if you make money your god, will never be really successful because you're never satisfied. But if you enjoy filling needs and making people happy, there's no end to your success."

—Stephen Arterburn in The Power Book

My Response: One way my Christian values are making a difference on my job is. …

Thought to Apply: Formula for success: Underpromise and overdeliver.
