Walt's Legacy Theme for this Week: Disciple Making Howard Hendricks Sunday, January 27, 2002
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: A student is not greater than the teacher. But the student who works hard will become like the teacher (Luke 6:4). Bonus Reading:Acts 16:15
Not long ago, Walt passed away in Philadelphia. Walt had a family, but none of particular celebrity. He had few possessions, for he'd never saved much as a tool and dye worker. He left no significant writings, for he'd never made it past the sixth grade. I doubt the obituaries devoted more than a few lines to his passing.
But Walt had and continues to have a profound impact for the cause of Christ. That's really all he ever wanted. In his younger days, Walt started a Sunday school class for boys. It was not an especially large class, nor was the church in which it was held especially noteworthy. Yet out of 13 boys in Walt's class, 11 entered vocational Christian work, of whom several remain active today. I'm one of them.
I call that a legacy! But it didn't just happen. Walt created that legacy by building into the lives of young men who needed a teacher, a guide, a coach, a father-figure, an older friend. A mentor is a person who invests himself in the life of another, helping him develop and grow.
