Coach's Life Lesson Theme for this Week: Disciple Making Gordon MacDonald Monday, January 28, 2002

Key Bible Verse: Keep putting into practice all you learned from me and heard from me and saw me doing
(Philippians 4:9). Bonus Reading:
In my first high school meet, I was entered in the 200-meter. Alvarez was my most serious challenger, a big runner who seemed a bit overweight. As I pounded my starting blocks in place, I ventured to say to Coach Marvin Goldberg, "I don't think I'll have any trouble taking him."
As the gun sounded, all six runners shot out of their starting positions and down the straightaway. About 22 seconds later Alvarez won going away.
As I walked dejectedly back, Coach Goldberg joined me. "Gordie, when you told me you'd have no trouble beating Alverez, I knew you'd lost the race already. And I decided to let you lose it even though it might hurt the overall team scoring.
"Never underestimate a competitor based on what he looks like or what you've heard about him. You judged him on the basis of his body, not his heart. And you must measure only against yourselfthroughout life. If your eyes are on what you think your competitors are going to do and not on the best you yourself can do, you'll lose all kinds of races over and over."
Coach was prepping me to understand that all of life is played for an audience of One.
