Leaving His Mark Theme for this Week: Disciple Making Howard Hendricks Tuesday, January 29, 2002

Key Bible Verse: But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught
for you know you can trust those who taught you (2 Timothy 3:14). Bonus Reading:
In 1919, a young man recovering from injuries suffered in the Great War rented a Chicago apartment near the home of veteran author Sherwood Anderson, known for his willingness to help younger writers.
For two years, they shared meals, took long walks, and discussed the craft of writing late into the night. The young man brought samples of his work to Anderson, who responded with brutally honest critiques. The young writer listened, took careful notes, then returned to his typewriter to improve his material. In 1926, Ernest Hemingway published his first novel, The Sun Also Rises.
Later, Anderson moved to New Orleans, and put a another young wordsmith, William Faulkner, through the same paces. Then, in Califor-nia, he worked with playwright Thomas Wolfe and John Steinbeck. Three of Anderson's protÉgÉs earned Nobel Prizes and four won Pulitzer Prizes. Critic Malcolm Cowley called Anderson "the only writer of his generation to leave his mark on the style and vision of the next."
One reason Anderson so generously helped younger people may have been that he had sat under an older writer, Theodore Dreiser.
