Theme for this Week: Disciple Making
Bruce Bickel & Stan Janz
Thursday, January 31, 2002

Key Bible Verse: I have no one else like Timothy, who genuinely cares about your welfare (Philippians 2:20). Bonus Reading:Philippians 2:19-24

Avid weightlifter Tom Hunt is one of the most dynamic and effective mentors we've ever met.

His garage has an array of weight machines that rival the local health club. He put the word out that his garage would be open three nights a week for guys to come lift for an hour or so. Tom would instruct them, lift with them, and then afterwards they'd "cool down" and talk.

Soon high school sophomores, juniors, and senior guys with muscle shirts and weight-lifting gloves came to Tom's garage every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday night to lift weights with him.

They lifted and talked, and it wasn't long before their discussions turned to serious matters, like life and relationships and God.

There's never any pressure. Tom isn't a Bible thumper, but he uses Bible study as a way to get these young guys to think about life's important lessons.

We talked to a couple of dads who love it that their sons are lifting and learning with Tom. They agreed that Tom was a great role model, because he was showing them how to build spiritual as well as physical muscles.

My Response: I'll explore using my experience in _____ to build discipling relationships.

Thought to Apply: It is not what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that counts.
—Eugene Bertin(science educator)
