Mark's boss called him into his office for his third annual review. After all the overtime he'd put in the past 12 months, Mark was looking forward to a glowing evaluation, a promotion, and a substantial merit raise. He'd already figured how he could upgrade his stereo system with the extra income. Life was looking good as Mark's boss closed the door.
"I know you've been working hard," the silver-haired gentleman began, "so you're probably not going to be too happy with what I have to say." The boss then proceeded to rattle off a litany of improvements he wanted to see in Mark's performance over the next yeareverything from fewer mathematical errors to clearer reports to working through more lunches. There'd be no merit raise until he could show improvement in all areas.
Mark left the office confused and bitter. And to make his day complete, he learned that afternoon that his friend David, with the firm for only two years, received the promotion Mark was expecting. [continued 4/22]
