It Isn't Fair!
Theme for this Week: Banishing Bitterness
Wednesday, April 24, 2002

Key Bible Verse: See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many (Hebrews 12:15, NIV). Bonus Reading:1 Peter 3:9–12

After a draining year of preparing for the two-hour ordeal, I'd confidently arrived at the grad school to defend my master's thesis. Eager to move on into the Ph.D. program, I answered my professors' questions and defended my conclusions. Then I left the room while they deliberated. When I returned, they informed me I'd passed. "But," the supervisory prof added, "the graduate committee has rejected your application into the doctoral program." He explained the school's reasoning as I fought back tears.

Feeling cheated, I raced home, slammed the door, and started sobbing uncontrollably. "The administration led me to believe I'd be admitted to the doctoral program if I completed the master's," I snuffled to my alarmed wife. "It isn't fair!"

But as the months dragged by, I began to glimpse the truth that, while life is unjust, God can be trusted. I chose to believe that God was at work for my ultimate good.

Because of this setback, events unfolded that led me to my current position: my most fruitful and fulfilling dozen years in ministry. And in 1996 I walked across the stage to receive my doctorate from another institution.

—Rick Ezell in Defining Moments

My Response: A setback that I'll offer to God for His reshaping is …

Thought to Apply: A man's venom poisons himself more than his victim.
—Charles Buxton (writer)

0Prayer for the Week

Dear God, help me to accept that wrongs I've suffered are Your problem, while resentments are my problem—and a sin.
