A Sure Thing Theme for this Week: Bad Bet Tuesday, March 12
Key Bible Verse: Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows (Proverbs 13:11). Bonus Reading:1 Timothy 6:611
A friend shared a story from his college days. He'd been responsible in high school, saving money and even doing some investing. But when he got to college he discovered the adrenaline rush that gambling could bring.
At first, he enjoyed moderate "success," but soon he found himself on a losing streak. After several down weeks, my friend decided he needed a big winner. Just one good week and he could win it all back. He'd break even. Then he could quit.
Three games. Fifteen hundred dollars wagered. He lost it all. My friend had to cash in his last IRA to pay his debt. To finish college, he joined the military. Instead of getting his degree at 22, he finally earned it at 28. And he doesn't gamble any more.
God's Word doesn't specifically prohibit gambling, but offers many principles about money. It doesn't advocate get-rich-quick schemes, whether legal or illegal. God favors honest work, careful spending habits, and generosity to the poor.
Enjoy sports, but don't waste your money gambling on an unsure thing. Learn the wise business practices of the Bible. That's the way to stay ahead of the game.
